Historic Vanajanlinna has the grandeur of a world gone by. Built in 1924 as a hunting lodge for the aristocracy, the charming Vanajanlinna Castle reflects the architectural trends of the early 1900s with touches of Baroque and Renaissance and English manor style. Vanajanlinna served as a meeting place of the Finnish elite, including Marshal Mannerheim. During the course of its eventful history, the castle has also served as a vacation house for a German arms manufacturer and as a folk high school. After World War II, the castle was transferred to the Soviet Union as war reparations. In the late 1990s, the castle was restored to its former glory. Vanajanlinna and its grounds offer a great selection of activities for the adventurous as well as the leisurely bon vivant.
