Imatran Valtionhotelli
The Imatra Valtionhotelli offers a historic setting and imperial grandeur right next door to Russia. Imatra and Svetogorsk make up the only twin cities on the EU-Russian border: from Imatra it is only six kilometers to Russia. In 1901, Finland's Senate gave architect Usko Nyström the task of designing a hotel of stone by the Imatrankoski rapids. Built in the European Jugend style, Grand Hotel de Cascade was inaugurated in October 1903. During the Finnish struggle for independence the hotel served as a military hospital, and during World War II it housed the staff officers of the army on Kannas. In 1985 a modern congress hotel designed by Ilmo Valjakka was built next to the Castle hotel and connected by an underground passageway.
